Adults Sleep Better Together Than They Do Alone

Adults who share a bed with a partner or spouse sleep better than those who sleep alone, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Arizona.

Results show that those who shared a bed with a partner most nights reported less severe insomnia, less fatigue, and more time asleep than those who said they never share a bed with a partner.

Frequent Snorers and Those With Sleep Apnea Are Less Active During the Day

Frequent snorers and individuals with a high risk of obstructive sleep apnea are less active than those who don’t snore, according to a new study to be presented at SLEEP 2022.

Researchers examined the relationship between snoring frequency and minutes of sedentary activity in three years of data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants reported snoring frequency and sedentary activity, and researchers developed a score to identify those at risk of sleep apnea.

A: Angela, sleep is the third pillar of health. There’s nutrition, physical exercise and then sleep — all three are interconnected. If you don't sleep well, you start not eating well. For example, people get food cravings when they haven’t slept well, and it’s usually for a high-carbohydrate food like a cookie. And when you are tired, the last thing you want to do is go to the gym. People who are functioning optimally pay attention to all three — they have to be optimized together.

Q: What happens when you don’t get enough sleep? (Bryce L.)

A: Bryce, sleep deprivation affects your ability to remember and concentrate. Sleep-deprived people have a compromised ability to make good decisions. Your reaction time is also reduced. A sleep-deprived driver has the same poor response time as someone who is legally intoxicated. Not getting enough sleep makes us more emotionally unstable. We can have really strong emotions, such as extreme sadness or anger, simply driven by a lack of sleep.
