The research is based on data from smart wristbands, used by the United Kingdom Biobank to determine our patterns of wakefulness and sleep. This was done by measuring the arm movements and twitches of participants over the course of several days.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: I'm going to be a new mother, when should I start a bedtime routine? (Pam K.)

Pam, there is no magical age to start a bedtime routine. In the early weeks and months your main goals are getting to know your new baby, learning how to read their cues, and adjusting to being a parent. You do not need to start a bedtime routine in the early months.

You can start your bedtime routine whenever you feel ready. This should not be a stressful thing hanging over your head. If you haven’t started one by 6-months, that’s a really good time to start one. Older babies and toddlers really benefit from bedtime routines. It’s never too late, however, and you can start a routine with your toddler or preschooler.

Q: How long should it take me to fall asleep? (Larry G.)

Larry, the amount of time required to fall asleep is known as SOL or sleep onset latency. Generally, a normal sleep latency is somewhere between ten and 20 minutes. Keep in mind, falling asleep instantaneously is not necessarily healthy and taking a little bit to fall asleep is perfectly fine. Taking less than five minutes could be a sign of sleep deprivation. Really short times to fall asleep often suggest significant sleepiness or sleep debt from insufficient sleep on prior nights, Other signs that you’re sleep deprived include fatigue, irritability, mood changes, difficulty focusing, a weakened immune system and a reduced sex drive.

If you’re lying in bed and struggling to fall asleep resist the urge to watch the clock and get stressed out about not sleeping in bed. After about 20 minutes of not being able to fall asleep, you should get out of bed and do something relaxing like reading in a dimly lit room. When you feel sleepy, get back into bed and try it again.
