This technique developed by the Navy to help pilots might just help you fall asleep a lot faster.

Getting more sleep matters. One 2018 study found that people who sleep for five to six hours are 19 percent less productive than people who regularly sleep for seven to eight hours per night, and people who sleep for less than five hours are nearly 30 percent less productive.

Sure, they're awake longer. But they actually get less done.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: Is it better, from a sleep-quality standpoint, to go to bed early and get up early or, to go to bed late and get up late? (Leroy C.)

Leroy, having a set bedtime routine and schedule is one of the most essential components to help getting your sleep back to normalcy. This means it is important to have a set wake-up and bedtime, and you should try not to deviate too much from these times even on weekends. Set your alarm in the morning, and don’t hit that snooze button. Try your best to get out of bed when your alarm goes off, and try to get outside — especially if the weather is good with a lot of sunshine in the morning. This will allow suppression of melatonin and reset that circadian rhythm. In the evenings, have a wind-down routine for you and your family. It can involve things like reading, stretching, meditating or doing a puzzle together. It’s perfectly ok to give yourself wind-down time each night, but be sure to have a consistent time to turn down those lights and keep the bedroom cool, quiet and dark.

Q: Is it true you shouldn't go to bed angry? (Harvey H.)

Harvey, having an argument before bed is not a good thing. Try your hardest to avoid a heated conversation with your significant other before bedtime. As the old saying goes, never go to bed angry, or bad feelings will harden into resentment. There is research to support the idea that negative emotional memories are harder to reverse after a night’s sleep. Anger is also a huge turn off. If you do this repeatedly, it creates an unhealthy pattern and destroys potential opportunities for sexual intimacy. Confrontations lead to a stress response which is exactly opposite of what you want if you’re trying to fall asleep easily. It’s important to create a peaceful environment for you and your partner to have a good night’s sleep.
