  • Digital impressions. Yes, it replaces that gooey stuff we have used forever. And it is more accurate, meaning the appliances should fit even better.
  • And we are now able to provide treatment for Vivos. Vivos is a new and exciting treatment option for Sleep Apnea. If this is something you want to find out more about, call our office.

Scientists find that watching some cliff-hanging television can actually help with nodding off - and it won't give you nightmares

The choice of evening television is crucial when relaxing after a long day, and it's traditionally thought that horrors or thrillers should be avoided before bedtime if you want a nightmare-free sleep.

However, a new study has found that watching suspenseful thrillers, even if filled with cliffhangers, has little impact on sleep quality and can actually help with nodding off.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: What is insomnia? (Tony P.)

A: Tony, there are many types of insomnia, but we generally see three types: inability to fall asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and waking up too early. Essentially, if it takes you longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep, or you wake up more than three times a night, for longer than 30 minutes, and this occurs more than three times per week, and lasts longer than three weeks, you probably have acute insomnia, which may be on its way to chronic if unresolved. There are lots of things that can help from sleeping aids to changes to your sleeping habits. If those don’t work, however, and your sleeplessness is bringing you significant distress, it could be worth booking in with your GP for further advice.

Q: Is sleep an ‘offline’ state? (Carl R.)

A: Carl, the traditional view is that when we sleep, we go into ‘rest’ mode. But this is outdated, and we now know that the brain is actually very active during sleep (some parts of the brain are even more active than in wakefulness). Such activity tells us that sleep is playing an important functional role leading to many theories on the roles of sleep. Research has found that, while we sleep, growth hormones are secreted and processed, neural connections are strengthened supporting learning and storage of memories, and harmful proteins are processed and flushed from the brain. Sleep also facilitates the processes necessary for optimizing our immune system and metabolism of food. So together, sleep provides a time for the body and mind to recalibrate and optimize waking function and health.
