Eight Ways To Help Your Kids Get A Good Night's Sleep

Nothing looks more peaceful than a sleeping child. But even when they’re curled up and tucked into bed, their brains are working hard on developmental activities like memory consolidation (the process of putting experiences in order, learning what’s important and unlearning what’s not).

“[Sleep] is crucial for everyone but especially for kids, who are developing both mentally and physically,” says Dr. Sumit Bhargava, director of Stanford Children’s Health Sleep Center. “We are learning more and more about the impact of sleep on regulatory hormones. For example, in kids, the most intense period of growth hormone release is shortly after the beginning of deep sleep.”

So, sleep is important, especially for kids. Sadly, just knowing your kids need a good night’s sleep doesn’t mean they’ll get it.

Q & A

Our readers are invited to email us with their questions!

Q: I heard wisdom teeth extractions can cause someone to develop breathing problems. Is there any truth to that? (Tiffany F.)

A: Hello Tiffany!

Usually that is not an issue, except in situations where third molars/wisdom teeth have been extracted.

That is due to the possible swelling of the surrounding tissues in the back of the mouth that can cause the problem. The other situation that can cause breathing issues is if after an extraction or a tooth is pulled there is an infection.

Infections of the mouth can spread and cause serious problems including breathing. If you have had an extraction and are having breathing problems, you should immediately go to the emergency room at your local hospital.

Hope this helps!

Q: What do I do if I get sleep paralysis? (Kris T.)

A: Hi Kris!

Most people need no treatment for sleep paralysis. Treating any underlying conditions such as narcolepsy may help if you are anxious or unable to sleep well. These treatments may include the following:

Improving sleep habits, such as making sure you get six to eight hours of sleep each night.
Using antidepressant medication if it is prescribed to help regulate sleep cycles.
Treating any mental health problems that may contribute to sleep paralysis.
Treating any other sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy or leg cramps.

Good Luck!
